Waiting for Flowers to Bloom

I was recently thinking about the similarities between gardening and growing a business.

You buy a few beautiful plants, put them in the ground and “Walla” its a garden!

You step back and look with pride at all of your hard work. You made the decision to clear the weeds, till the soil and plant flowers in anticipation of beautiful blooms.

This is similar to when a person makes a decision to go into business. They do the research, secure funding, order inventory, and open the doors for business.  They stand back and excitedly await their first customers and sales.

As with the garden, the business when fresh and new, draws the attention of people around it.  However, after a while the newness wears off, the blooms start to fade and die off.

It’s up to the caretaker of both the garden and the business to tend their plot and make sure that it continues to thrive. No garden will grow without water, sun and fertile soil to nourish the plants.  And similar to the garden, businesses need to be nourished as well.

Just like a garden, a business needs continued nourishment to help it grow and thrive. As water and fertilizer feed and nourish your flowers, your marketing campaign can help to nourish your business and keep it growing.

In a garden, plants that are not working and or don’t belong need to be weeded out. The same is true of business marketing efforts.  Reviewing your marketing and promotional campaign on a regular basis to determine what efforts are giving you’re the best return is important to continued growth.

Offering occasional special promotions, new products and services, and continuing to reach out to your target market in an innovative and creative manner will help to keep your customers intrigued and your business blooming.
