I was recently thinking about the similarities between gardening and growing a business.

You buy a few beautiful plants, put them in the ground and “Walla” its a garden!

You step back and look with pride at all of your hard work. You made the decision to clear the weeds, till the soil and plant flowers in anticipation of beautiful blooms.

As an independent Graphic Designer, I do a lot of networking to meet potential design and marketing clients. Often, when I hand someone my business card, the first question they usually ask me is not what do you do?…But “What does the “G” stand for?”

I explain that it stands for graphics…that it comes from 11G, the unit of the condo when I started the company…that the letter represents the bump out of my garage in that same condo. And, all of these things are true!

As a business owner it is sometimes easy to get caught up in the day to day tasks of running the business, and forget the reason that you ventured down the path in the first place.

In my household this day is more important than Superbowl Sunday, the World Series, Birthdays and possibly even Christmas Day.

For me it means the loss of the remote control util sometime in late October, and the ever present buzz of high speed engines tires on asphalt coming from the TV every weekend. The DVR has already filled up with races that everyone already knows who won.

Seriously, how many times have you caught yourself either saying this line or at least thinking it to yourself. I have found that I could really use another day between Thursday and Friday so that I can accomplish everything that I need to and not carry my work into the weekend.

I truly believe in the old saying “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”. This not only goes for meeting people, but also in how you present your business.

If your company adapts an attitude of “good enough” with its own brand, that will be how potential customers view you.
